Hi, I'm Bill Smyth. I grew up in Canada, and got my Ph.D. in physics at the University of Toronto. As a student, I was fascinated by chaos, which led me to study fluid turbulence. I specialize in theory and simulations, but I've also had the opportunity to do observational research as part of the Ocean Mixing Group at Oregon State. This is an ancient picture of me, included because I wisely stopped allowing myself to be photographed when I turned 50.

My specialty is performing and analyzing direct numerical simulations of turbulent events observed in the ocean. Here is my home page.

When I'm not doing science, I try to be a musician. I write, record and perform in collaboration with my wife, Rita Brown. We have a rock band called The Flow

The background image for this page was avant-garde in 1996. Then it went through a period of being corny and dated. Now it's "retro". All things flow.
